The fragrance trend report
In the world of fragrance, trends are always swirling around. They usually begin within niche fragrance houses who are often experimental and adventurous, and gradually make their way to mainstream, commercial fragrance. Trends are circular so we often see the same things coming around in cycles, much like fashion. And likewise, fashion and fragrance co-exist within trends. The two go hand in hand as fragrance is an extension of someone’s persona.
We tend to notice these trends moving and building steam so we thought we’d collate them all here.
Ok, ok! We know…this isn’t new and we’re not breaking any ground here. But hey, we can’t help it if the world is still going bananas for vanilla. What we’re seeing in the niche perfumery is that vanilla is being reinvented. Because we’ve been there, done that. Niche perfumery is reinventing the way vanilla is done. We’re talking vanilla but blending it with new and surprising notes to keep it interesting. From dark and smoky vanillas, to syrupy vanilla, to honeyed vanilla. It’s sweet and delicious but also interesting.
This is one of the prized and expensive natural ingredients, Saffron has been used in fragrance for a long time, however we are seeing it become incredibly prominent in fragrances that also have ‘beast mode’ intensity. The spice itself is dark, spicy, and bold, but also light and vibrant. It can add a sizzle of fire to a fragrance and we are seeing it in a lot of rich, decadent scents right now.
The lactonic fragrance trend has been gradually rising as an alternative to vanilla perfumes – it’s gourmand yet has a soft and subtle creaminess as opposed to a heady, sweet vanilla tone. Milky fragrances also work incredibly well as part of the ‘clean girl’ aesthetic which is also obviously popular (and has been for a while now). Milky fragrances are often scents that give us a sense of comfort and familiarity. They can be somewhat skin-like yet with a creaminess that elevates the fragrance so we can certainly see why everyone loves them.
Fruity fragrances have been having a hot minute since last summer (again, another arm of the gourmand trend that is never-ending). Fruity fragrances give us a nostalgia, there is an undeniable youth that is evoked from a juicy fruity fragrance. They are full of life and vibrance! However, as per usual in the niche perfume world, trending fruits evolve and change with time and this time – its all about those succulent mangos!
Yeah, I know, we’ve already covered so many gourmand notes in perfumery (and you better believe we have more on the list). We are loving this trend for surprising gourmands – may it be savoury yet delicious fragrances, the most herbaceously mouthwatering scents or uber photorealistic perfumes. This is true niche fragrance ingenuity right here – taking a trend that has been in motion for a (quite) some time and pushing it past new and exciting boundaries.
So we thought that oud had its big moment about 8 years ago, and yes it did, it really really did! It has only been in the recent decades that the western world has fallen in love with oud and it has become more widely used in fragrance. So we’re lucky enough to see it more and more and, it’s at a point (like with vanilla) where we are seeing it in new and exciting blend and interpretations. So yes, friends – oud is big and oud is back on the trend radar!
We mentioned this in our opening, and you might be seeing a bit of a trend here, but the world of perfumery is cyclical and molecular fragrances are seeing some love right now. They’re being blended with interesting notes to ensure that they not only have that ‘your-skin-but-better’ clean girl vibe but also have a little somethin’ somethin’ to give them an interesting twist.
Natural fragrance has been developing over the years and we are lucky enough at Lore to house some brands that are producing natural, functional fragrance that is so sophisticated and incredible that it lives up to our (very) high fragrance standards! In a world obsessed with wellness, it only makes sense that your fragrance should not only smell amazing, look amazing and be an extension of your style – it can also have holistic benefits too.
Strawberry is such a fun note to see in perfumes right now. It feels sweet and juicy, yet also has a green (slightly sharp) tang to it that just elevates fragrances without being overtly fruity or sickly sweet. Like with mango, strawberry is a playful note – it can smell jammy and delicious based on what it is blended with and it can even create that very specific plastic-y doll smell which adds such an interesting dimension to a scent (plus obvious childlike nostalgia!).
Tis’ the season for strong scents! Every second fragrance house is bringing out a stronger, punchier more intense version this year. The thing that we like about this is that the extraits are often reimagined and slightly different to the original so they offer more variety and options for fans of the fragrance house. Plus of course, they appeal to anyone who wants the kind of fragrance that makes a very powerful statement to anyone within 10 metres of them!
Rhubarb is like our little stealth trending note that has been popping up in fragrance after fragrance. It may not be the star of the show, but boy, does it pack a unique punch. Rhubarb is not your average fruit! It is not giving sweet, playful, juicy fruitiness. It is giving you that green, sharp, tangy scent. It is mouthwatering in a similar way to drinking straight lemon juice. Tart. And the most intriguing addition to a fragrance – it can perfectly balance sweetness, or soft notes to seriously elevate a scent and ensure it is unforgettable.
Hair perfumes offer several different appealing options (which is certainly why they are so popular right now). Firstly – they offer a lower price point that makes them more accessible to more people. Secondly – they offering a layering tool for those who want more intensity and strength from their fragrance. And on the opposite end of that scale – they also offer a lighter, less intense option for people who may love a fragrance but don’t enjoy how strong it is. In other words, hair perfumes offer options. And we all love that!
