Cowboy Kush kicks off with warm hazelnut and soft white leather, matures into cannabis flower and worn suede, and then settles into smooth tonka and patchouli. Sweet, smoky and slightly wild. Think rodeo rebel meets downtown after-hours.

“For me the challenge here was to blend the unexpected- taking rustic notes and making them more refined. I wanted to make the top feel comforting and smooth, almost like warm, cracked leather with a zesty touch of mandarin and a hint of sweet hazelnut. The heart is a bit more adventurous- saffron flower and tobacco leaves bring this earthy, almost wild vibe, while cannabis leaf adds a really cool, green edge. For the dry down, I used tonka beans, patchouli, suede and oud to exude this deep, rich warmth- grounding the fragrance in this perfectly mysterious, smoky finish. HOW IT WEARS
Cowboy Kush kicks off with the bright minerality of saffron combining with resinous cannabis. It doesn’t take long before the scent begins to mellow, the nutty creaminess of hazelnut melding with the white leather, which isn’t sharp, it’s more worn and smooth, like a brown suede jacket. Next comes patchouli, making for a slightly dirty dry down which is overseen by tonka bean’s powdery sweetness. 

LORE LOVES
Compared to the old formulation, this iteration of Cowboy Kush is a little less skunky, a little more sexy. It’s the scent of a present-day cowboy, who has a toke of a joint in a laneway before flicking it onto the ground as they saunter to their favourite honky tonk dive bar hidden somewhere in the city. Everyone there is dressed in their best neo-western gear – leather jackets, cowboy boots, suede hats, vintage Levi’s jeans. All the patrons of the bar are cool as cucumbers, toothpicks hanging out the corners of their mouths, as they watch the bravest (or stupidest) of their partners hop onto the mechanical bull just to get tossed off one at a time. Our cowboy sits in the corner, after lining up a song on the jukebox, eyelids low. We find the cannabis fades away fairly quick in Cowboy Kush, and the scent sobers up to reveal a creamy, sexy suede.

In late 2015, Boy Smells began as an experiment in candle-making in the Los Angeles kitchen of co-founders and partners Matthew Herman and David Kien. Herman and Kien began by making the things they’d want to use daily – products that were fluid, essential, but also accessible.
Each fragrance draws inspiration from the founders’ memories and experiences, but also takes into account the context and history attached to different smells. Each Boy Smells fragrance is like the complex identity of a person, full of dualities and contradictions, and because of that, wearing them allows you to reinforce your sense of self every day before you walk out the door.
