The History of P. Frapin & Cie

P. Frapin & Cie is one of the most special brands we stock at Lore. As a perfumery passionate about storytelling, we love the way Frapin embraces history, literature and art in their fragrance concepts – each perfume truly tells a story. The brand’s premiere fragrance, 1270, has been a bestseller for us for a long time, and each of their releases since then has been even more exciting than the last. So, we wanted to put a bit of a spotlight on Frapin and get you acquainted or re-acquainted.
Just over 750 years ago, the Frapin family settled in Charente, part of the famous Grande Champagne region in France. There, in rich fertile soils, they sowed vineyards, the fruit born of which would be distilled into artisanal cognac for 20 generations, right up until the present day.

The P in P. Frapin & Cie stands for Pierre, the father of the Frapin house as it exists today, who was an apothecary to King Louis XIV and awarded with a coat of arms for it. This coat of arms (rather more elaborate today) is now etched into each bottle of Frapin perfume!

In the early 2000s, Béatrice Cointreau (daughter of the owners of house Frapin, who also happens to be descended from the founders of Cointreau and Rémy Martin) was at a cognac tasting. It had been a long day, and Béatrice had the idea to try her cognac a different way – she splashed a little on the back of her hand to smell before tasting. Everyone at the tasting commented on the incredible aroma it gave off, and so Frapin’s first fragrance,1270, was born!

Seizing the opportunity to captivate the senses through another evocative artform, Frapin began to create scents inspired by their cognacs, their history and land. Much like the production of Frapin’s cognac, their fragrance line reflects their proudly French savoir-faire, passion for quality ingredients and patience in developing artisanal methodology. The house says themselves: “the quintessence of luxury is taking time to create beauty”.

Some of our favourite fragrances from Frapin

This fragrance is so delicious and so sexy, it’s easy to imagine getting a whiff of it on your lover’s neck. It does have a sense of fun and excitement about it (like a brand new love affair) because of its bright, juicy opening, but the magic happens in the dry down, when it really melds with the skin. It leans a little more stereotypically masculine, but anyone who wears 6 Hours to Rio is immediately 100 x more irresistible – apply with caution!

This scent is the natural sequel – or could even be considered the second distillation – of 1270, the house’s first cognac inspired scent. Paying homage to the history of the Frapin house and its immense savoir-faire when it comes to both cognac and perfume, Bonne Chauffe is a Good Toast indeed! After a long day working, the scents of sweet liquor, vanilla milk and French coffee reward body and soul.

Speakeasy is inspired by the prohibition era and its consequent illicit establishments where people met underground to drink, smoke, dance, banter, and forget about life for a while. The fragrance is redolent of a 1920s speakeasy – worn leather couches beside the bar, the scent of the finest Cuban cigars, a freshly poured Mojito, women reapplying their lipstick and powder, everyone’s fragrances mingling, and a lust for life.

Inspired both by Edgar Allan Poe’s poem The Raven as well as the story of “The Toaster”,an anonymous Poe fan who every year on the poet’s birthday would lay three red roses and a flask of cognac on his grave. A hauntingly beautiful scent, Nevermore combines the scent of rose oxide with wine, spices and woods in an elegant and unique way.

Inspired by the classic poem If by Rudyard Kipling. If captures the essence of India in 1910, as well as gentle and sentimental message of what it takes to live with integrity and dignity as he grows into a man. As an ode to India, the soft spices dance on the skin while the creamy Fig and earthy notes balance them perfectly. A complex scent that at times seems gentle and other times more brash, a scent of contrasts. We love how the fig creates a gorgeous creaminess against the backdrop of spices and woody tones.
