Renowned noses Luca Maffei and Antoine Lie have centred each of the Intenso fragrances around a classic Italian perfumery ingredient, reinterpreting and refreshing them. In colourful new bottles, the Intenso fragrances showcase the best of what Italy has to offer in the present day while remaining rooted in Carthusia’s rich history and tradition.

INTENSO DI GINESTRA
On the sunlit coasts where the Mediterranean meets the land, where the wind carries the wild aroma of blooming broom flowers, Intenso di Ginestra by Carthusia is born.
Ginestra, or bloom flowers, are wildflowers that grow all over Italy, with bright yellow blooms that come out in the summer. Not only do they smell heavenly (it has a honeyed aroma similar to honeysuckle or ylang ylang) but in Calabria, its stems have been used to make textiles for hundreds of years. Thus, Intenso di Ginestra is a tale of nature and sophistication, of strength and grace. It is a journey through the wonders of the Mediterranean.

HOW IT WEARS
Beginning with luminous neroli intertwined with sparkling bergamot and vibrant lemon leaves, Intenso di Ginestra deepens as it wears. In the heart, broom flower absolute takes centre stage with its warm, enveloping essence. Alongside it, jasmine adds a soft floral elegance, while tuberose amplifies the sensuality of the composition. The base notes reveal the sweetness of vanilla, blending with the creamy richness of sandalwood and the velvety softness of musk. Together, they create a trail that wraps around you, caresses the senses, and lingers like the memory of a sunset slowly fading on the horizon.

LORE LOVES
Intenso di Ginestra is like the scent of the Tuscan Hills in high summer, the scent of white and yellow florals opened up by the sun, blanketing the landscape as far at the eye can see. We love Carthusia’s use of the lesser-known Broom flower in this fragrance; it has floral facets as well as slightly earthier facets that almost remind us of hay as it wears and gets richer and deeper. This is the perfect summer floral, but due to its warmth and enveloping quality, it would be beautiful in the colder months too.

ABOUT THE BRAND
In 1380 on the island of Capri, the monks of Carthusian Monastery of St. Giacomo were taken by surprise when they learnt that Queen Joan of Anjou would be visiting them. Legend has it the father prior went around the island, gathering the most beautiful flowers he could find to present to the queen. The flowers were kept in water for 3 days, and just as the monks went to throw them away, they noticed a beautiful fragrance coming from the water. They went to their alchemist, who figured out how to recreate and preserve the scent, thus creating the first perfume of Capri.
Hundreds of years later, in 1948, the monks’ perfume formulas were rediscovered by the Priory of Certosa. With permission from the Pope, a chemist went about reproducing the formulas in a small laboratory, named Carthusia.
In the late 40s painter Mario Laboccetta created Carthusia’s logo – a flower siren surrounded by native Capresi blooms, symbolising the brand’s indissoluble bond with Capri.
Today, Carthusia’s fragrances are still all handmade, observing centuries old practises, ensuring the highest level of quality in their fragrances. The spirit and history of Capri is embedded in every Carthusia product, and all ingredients are derived from Capri’s environment, paying homage to the beautiful island.
