HOW IT WEARS
For us, Matcha Break opens really green, with the crisp vegetal character of bamboo and the sweet grassiness of matcha. It quickly develops though to reveal its milky, lactonic heart – the white chocolate is super prominent for us, sweet and creamy. As it continues to dry down, Matcha Break gets earthier, revealing a very subtle umami, just like real ceremonial-grade matcha. Like all Chasing Scents fragrances, this scent has incredible longevity and lasting power.

Put it this way – if you love drinking matcha, you’ll love Matcha Break. It’s the fragrance equivalent of a refreshing morning walk to go and fetch your iced matcha, or getting up early to whisk it yourself. Basically, taking time out of your day to do a self-care ritual. This scent has a really lovely fresh tranquility to it, but also a good amount of sweetness, so functions as a complex, well-rounded perfume rather than just a straight up photorealistic matcha. ABOUT THE BRAND
Founded by Sandy Wong in 2021, Chasing Scents is an Australian perfume house dedicated to capturing the essence of tea through fragrance.
Chasing Scents perfumes draw their inspiration from the experience and ritual of drinking tea, from enjoying it by yourself to sharing it with loved ones. Their scents are modern but still rich in their cultural roots, with formulas that use a variety of teas, natural extracts, aroma compounds and resins.
Sandy grew up in Sydney, Australia; where she grew curious about her mother’s miniature perfume collection from Hong Kong. Today, she is a scientist with a PhD in Chemistry. It was during her candidature she experimented with scents out of hours and discovered the scientific mystery of perfumes with her partner.
Many mainstream tea perfumes have a rather extrapolated representation of what a “tea” aroma is, using other notes to replicate the smell of tea. That’s where Chasing Scents is different – they use actual tea extracts to create realistic and true tea fragrances. Tinctures and soxhlet extractions of dried whole flower buds and loose tea leaves are performed over multiple cycles under strict conditions to obtain aromatic concentrates that smell good enough to drink.
