Part of Matiere Premiere’s newer Extraits collection, this fragrance is a reinterpretation of the original Crystal Saffron, elevated and intensified.
ABOUT THE FRAGRANCE
In Crystal Saffron, perfumer Aurélien Guichard wanted to hero the opulent and compelling note of saffron. In creating the fragrance he really wanted to highlight the warm, mineralic and… you guessed it, crystalline scent profile of the spice. Where the Extrait version differs is with the addition of Somali myrrh, which in comparison to the original, adds a more rounded, resinous feel to the composition. In addition to the slight change in notes, the strength of the fragrance has been amped up – and let us tell you, this is one of the strongest extraits we’ve ever tried!

Like all Matiere Premiere fragrances, Crystal Saffron Extrait is quite simple and minimal notes-wise, in an effort to let each note truly shine rather than let its purity be drowned out in a sea of too many notes.

Crystal Saffron uses the highest quality saffron in the world which is harvested on the plateaus of the Kozani region in northern Greece. The crocus flower is picked and then pruned to isolate and dry only the three red stigmas. From this, the Greek Saffron Essence is extracted, natural and non-allergenic, which offers notes that are at once dark, spicy, and bold, but also light and vibrant. On smelling this saffron for the first time, Aurélien “was immediately inspired by its luminous, almost crystalline appearance. It’s vibrant, comfortable, addictive character.”
THE ADDITION OF MYRRH
There are a lot of brands coming out with extrait or extract versions of their fragrances, especially in the wake of the “Beast Mode” fragrance trend, but what is especially satisfying about the Matiere Premiere Extraits is that they’re not only stronger, they’re a little different too. Where the original Crystal Saffron is a crystalline, pure saffron fragrance – like smelling the dried fronds of the crocus flower up close, the Extrait takes those fronds and melts them in resin, softening them, allowing them to release all their olfactory facets, kind of like how you would toast aromatics in a pan to help to release their full flavour when cooking.
