Like any art form, perfumery is about storytelling, and perfumery is one of the world’s oldest art forms – it’s been an integral part of society basically since society has been a thing! For thousands of years, many spiritual and religious practices have gone hand in hand with fragrance and perfume. It’s been a way of making ordinary people feel connected to something bigger, which is why you will find use of it and reference to it in so many of the most iconic stories told, forces believed in and beings worshipped. It’s formed perfume making tradition and know-how as we know it, and therefore has led to modern perfumery being what it is today.
With that in mind, on the evening of Wednesday February 25th, we thought we’d run an exclusive Lore Perfumery event all about the influence of fragrance in mythology and spiritual practice.
During the course of the night, our perfume experts will guide you through an exploration of the important role fragrance has played in the greatest stories ever told – from the Epic of Gilgamesh to Homer’s Odyessy, from the Bible to the Quran to the Torah, as well as the mythologies and storytelling traditions of many other cultures. Which Ancient Egyptian goddess favoured the scent of a rose? What incenses were burned to please Chinese deities? And what fragrances do we have at Lore Perfumery that might mimic a scent worn or used by a worshipper or divine being throughout history? We will explore all of that and more!
