Smoke drifts in slow ribbons, carrying with it the sweetness of citrus and the grit of tobacco. Horses breathe steady in the dark, their weight pressed into earth and hay. A saddle doubles as a pillow, leather worn smooth by years of travel, by hands that knew only movement.
Twilight settles, and the stars arrive – quiet witnesses to a way of life carved from patience and simplicity. It is a rhythm unhurried, a comfort drawn from small rituals: fire, orange peels, a resting saddle and silence. Yet beneath the stillness lies a truth – this world is fragile, its memory slipping further with each passing evening.
This is Gaucho. To bottle it is to carry its spirit forward. To smell it is to resist forgetting.

HOW IT WEARS
On the skin, Gaucho swaggers forward with an intriguing combination of bitter, astringent dried orange peels and sweet almonds. It’s a gourmand, but a very unexpected one, because of some smoky hay that shines through on the dry down. Once it settles, it’s quite smooth, like papyrus, horse hair, or the aftertaste of pipe tobacco. This a scent that truly goes on a journey as it wears, becoming rather languid and intimate over time, like the end of a story told over a campfire.
LORE LOVES
We love the story Gaucho tells us in the way it develops on the skin – it’s like a long-exposure photograph. Historically, gauchos emerged in post-colonial Argentina and Uruguay as nomadic cowhands and horse-herders. Like the “saddle tramps” and cowboys of the North American west, they have endured as folk heroes of ballads and epic poetry since. Gaucho experiments beautifully with the idea of such a legend, encapsulating the ideal of a life lived interstitially and humbly, but freely: tending closely to horses, smoking fruits and meats for the long journey ahead and sleeping on animal hides which have absorbed the smell of a crackling campfire in a wide-open landscape. For all its strength and difference, it’s not boisterous, but rather effortlessly interesting.
ABOUT THE BRAND
Vararoha is an independent Australian artisanal fragrance house based in the Macedon Ranges. Named after an old Sanskrit word, one translation of which is “ready to offer boons or gifts”, the concept of Vararoha is meaningful in many ways to founder and perfumer Prashant’s ethos and heritage.
Each Vararoha fragrance is presented as a gift to those curious enough to receive them, to those who seek beauty not as an ornament, but as an inheritance of experience. Those who engage in quiet rebellion – honouring individuality in a world that often pushes us towards homogeny. Standing out, for Vararoha, isn’t about being louder or brighter or bolder. It’s about recognising that acceptance crafted for everyone rarely fits anyone. It’s about about standing out by standing true.
Vararoha fragrances are born from experimentation, intention, and a deep respect for an ancient craft. Each creation begins with observation – a fleeting mood, a subtle tone, a fragment of memory. What starts as stories and notes in a journal slowly becomes an olfactory structure, a composition of rare ingredients and carefully chosen accords. Every fragrance is developed by the perfumer and founder, working with ethically sourced ingredients to create scents that are both timeless and unapologetically individual.
