Your How-To Guide on Layering Fragrances

We love layering here at Lore, as it allows us to get the absolute most out of our fragrance collection…but what is it?

Layering can be the mixing of two fragrances on top of one another on the skin; it can also be the body products you use before fragrances to enhance or “remix” your perfume’s scent. Layering can mean spraying two things in the same place on your body, or wearing one fragrance in your hair or on your clothes, and another on your skin. There really aren’t many rules.

Not only can layering help you get more out of your fragrances (2 perfumes layered = 3 altogether!) it can help to improve longevity and sillage, plus it allows you to create a scent customised to your personal taste.

DO layer fragrances with dominant notes in common

This is often a good way to tell if things are going to go together!

DO Experiment

It's the only way you’ll be able to figure out what works best for you.

DON'T layer fragrances that are overly complex

It’s better to use more simple fragrances as they are less likely to clash.

DON'T spray a lighter fragrance before a heavier one

The heavier one will drown it out. Let the heavier fragrance dry down a bit before spraying the lighter fragrance on top.

Here are some combos we have been playing with and loving recently!

Scandalwood + Dirty Vanilla

Both with a base of sandalwood and otherwise made up of warm, creamy sweeter notes, Scandalwood and Dirty Vanilla are a smooth and seductive pair that work together like a dream.

BUY DIRTY VANILLA

Nudiflorum + Narcotic V

Nudiflorum’s rich floral intensity and leathery base paired with Narcotic V’s brighter, fresher floral facets creates a multi-dimensional white floral cocktail that’s captivatingly sexy and feminine.

Cherry Punk + Falcon Leather

Because Cherry Punk already has a base of leather, adding Falcon Leather to the mix intensifies the fragrance, making it darker, deeper and a little less sweet, allowing you to take the fragrance from day to night.

BUY FALCON LEATHER

Bois d'Enfants + Soft Tension

Bois d’Enfants and Soft Tension have freesia in common – Bois d’Enfants with warm fruity, woody facets and Soft Tension with bright clean musk and wood. The result of their mixing is an earthy, softly sweet masterpiece.

BUY BOIS D’ENFANTS

BUY SOFT TENSION

Genetic Bliss + Cuirs

Genetic Bliss is made up of captive molecules that mimic the smell of a rich sandalwood, so it only makes sense to layer with a scent like Cuirs, which along with Australian Sandalwood also provides the added intrigue of tobacco and oud.

Purple Heart + Coeur de Noir

This marriage is all about aniseed – the Purple Heart provides sweetness from black cherry and plum, and Coeur de Noir adds smoke, leather and an ink note to the equation which is just breathtaking.

Not a Perfume + Lili Fantasy

A fragrance designed to use in layering, Not a Perfume is pure ambroxan. Layering it with Lili Fantasy elevates the fragrance, making it cleaner and a little more musky, while still letting the floral elements shine through.
