Working with renowned French perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, Grandiflora founder Saskia developed Boronia as an ode to her childhood. Having grown up in rural NSW, Saskia remembers the scent of the bush, the trees, the native flowers, and the dry yet rich earthy tone of the Australian bush.

The native boronia flower is a rich, aromatic floral, and produces one of the most expensive natural fragrant essences on earth due to its rarity. The fact that it’s pollinated by just one type of tiny, day-flying moth (itself dependent on the flower for survival) makes the boronia one of the world’s extraordinary botanical miracles.

In this fragrance, Bertrand Duchaufour used his legendary skill and insight to touch the complexity of boronia, embellishing it with exquisite hints of cassis and freesia, of sunburnt hay, hemlock and immortelle absolute, creating an enigmatic olfactory interpretation of the Australian landscape.

HOW IT WEARS
Boronia’s opening is rich and boozy, the cognac mingling with the tea and resinous notes. After the top fades a little, the boronia note appears, darkened by suede and sweetened by osmanthus. The dry down is both woody and darkly gourmand, almost molasses-y. As an EDP Boronia will give you 6-8 hours of longevity on the skin, with excellent projection.

LORE LOVES
Boronia takes us back in time; it has an old-world, sophisticated feel about it. We smell a dark buttery sweetness, meeting the forest floor. There is also a touch of a leathery tobacco, the leather we attribute to the suede note, which compliments the cognac and takes us to the middle of nowhere in the beautiful Australian bush. The Australian landscape of Saskia’s childhood through Bertrand’s French lens.

ABOUT THE BRAND
I cannot do without flowers. They are my muse, my passion, my world.”
– Grandiflora founder, Saskia Havekes.
In 1995, Saskia opened her flower shop, Grandiflora, in Potts Point, Sydney. The name draws its inspiration from the Magnolia grandiflora, Saskia’s favourite flower. Magnolias have existed for tens of millions of years, making them representative of the immense beauty and power of nature. The Grandiflora fragrance collection is born from Saskia’s love for flowers and want to capture and distil the rarity of transient scented flowers. Complex, subtle and vivid, the enigma of these flowers has yielded six distinct and original fragrances.
Saskia’s first fragrance mission was to create an ode to her beloved Magnolia grandiflora. This resulted in the birth of Magnolia Grandiflora – Sandrine and Magnolia Grandiflora – Michel, the former inspired by a magnolia at the beginning of its life cycle, the latter at the end.
Then came Madagascan Jasmine, a fragrance with great subtlety and a spiritual integrity that captures the glory and intensity of the stunning white flower. Next was Boronia, an elegy to Australian native flowers, inspired by Saskia’s bush childhood. Using another “impossible” flower, Grandiflora then developed the mystical Queen of the Night, an homage to the enigmatic cactus flower that blooms only once a year in the heart of the night.
Finally, in celebration of 25 years of Grandiflora, Saskia launched her namesake fragrance. Saskia is an ambitious evocation; its layered beauty of contrasts reaches for both the scents and the sensibility of one of the world’s most intriguing little flower shops. This fragrance was the 2022 Art and Olfaction Awards winner for an Independent fragrance.
