Wild, woody and spellbinding, Arborist explores the relationship between man and tree.

Arborist is an ode to enchanting woodlands, the likes of which are found across Jorum’s native Scotland.

Be warned, Arborist is not just lumber. It is an imagined day-in-the-life of a Virideer.

Arborist possesses a rugged opening mellowing into sun-bleached woods, malted cereals and worked-skin. A symphony of nature untamed.

The core structure of Arborist is redolent of many great Scots timbers; their leaves, flowers, fruits, roots and soil being the quintessential portrait of the forest.

Arborist presents a unique blend of raw flowers, botanicals, resin sap, underwood and surprising forest fruits. Resolutely sylvan and intriguingly multifaceted with more than a hint of human skin, oily tool and distilling elixirs haunting from afar.

PROGRESSIVE BOTANY VOL.1
Arborist is part of Jorum Studio’s Progressive Botany Vol. 1 collection, which takes inspiration from the natural world. Each fragrance in this collection reinterprets botanical forms and natural phenomena using a combination of exceptional natural ingredients and innovative aroma molecules to create vivid and rich olfactory responses.

HOW IT WEARS
For us, Arborist opens with a snap of pine resin, all at once astringent, balsamic and sharp. Then, the fragrance softens, warms and becomes sweeter with the presence of honey, malt, osmanthus and saffron. Clinging to the sides of the composition are musky, earthy, dirty mosses that eventually melt into the sweet, molasses-y resins of myrrh and labdanum. This fragrance is anything but linear though. The initial bitter sharpness of spruce and fir from the opening persist throughout the wear of Arborist, but soften to the point of almost becoming leathery with time, which when combined with oud actually makes this fragrance pretty animalic to our noses.

LORE LOVES
Apparently Arborist is partially inspired by The Green Man, a medieval motif of a man’s head framed in foliage that can be found carved into buildings and churches across the UK and France. Over time, he has come to be associated with neo-pagan culture and belief as a symbol of life, death and regeneration (which also recalls the Ents in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, or even The Green Knight of 14th century poetic fame). We think this is fitting as Arborist is a fragrance that feels truly alive, a bridge between flora and fauna – fitting of course, as an Arborist is a person who is an expert on the cultivation and care of trees. Of course, this fragrance smells like a tree and all the life it sustains – mosses, lichen, the soil it regenerates – but due to its slightly animalic edge, it also reminds us of the scent of someone who works with trees. Think an Arborist coming home with calloused hands scented with sap, leafy debris clinging to their clothes which reek of soil and sweat after a long day’s work. It’s a reminder (like all of the Progressive Botany Vol. 1 fragrances) that man and nature are interlinked, an idea as old as time itself.

Jorum Studio

Jorum Studio

Founded in 2019, Jorum Studio is an independent, perfumer-led fragrance house based in Edinburgh. Led by Scottish nose Euan McCall, the house is all about celebrating the art of perfumery with an approach that prioritises originality, craftsmanship and fearless creativity.

Every Jorum fragrance is conceived, formulated, manufactured, macerated, bottled and finished entirely in-house, giving the studio complete creative freedom and an uncompromising approach to quality. This is no accident – Jorum actually started in 2010 as Jorum Laboratories, a manufacturer of perfume oils for other fragrance houses and clients.

One of our favourite things about Jorum as a house is their incorporation of notes you may never have seen or heard of before, some of which are synthesised, some of which are natural – something they have the power to create and use as producers of fragrance oils themselves. Each one you come across challenges you to expand your olfactory palate, use your imagination and think more laterally about fragrance, which we feel is what really sets them apart as a brand.

Inspiration for the Jorum fragrances come from everywhere – from Scottish folklore to nature, from technical quality to personal memory. As a house they don’t tie themselves to any singular defining concept, rather they focus on creating fragrances that feel authentic in their uniqueness, asking the wearer to bring their own interpretations to the table.

Experimental, daring, and above all irreverent, Jorum Studio’s fragrances have seriously wowed us here at Lore Perfumery, and we are so excited to have them as part of our offering!
